Here’s a before-and-after story with some school spirit built in. My granddaughter’s school was looking for a makeover. Per their superintendent, “For many years, their Performing Arts Center, or PAC, had hosted important events for the school community, but the physical space itself lacked a true sense of district pride.”

Before the new paint job, the PAC was kind of dull.

Since I love “Long Distance Design” (I call it LDD), I was excited to do something really nice with that somewhat uninspiring space.

There were a few “givens,” such as we couldn’t change the stage curtain (red), since it was very expensive and relatively new, as was the carpet (grayish). So I tackled what I knew I could “make different.” The brown wood stage front and the lower wall, a gold color, needed a lot of help.

To look smart and bold, I decided the perfect thing was to make them black. Then the stepped-up wall called out to be striped. So I colored some stripes white, then gray, and added some red stripes, of course, and a small black line. Then, using a photo of the room, I used my “crayons” to “paint” my new scheme.

I varied the positions and amounts of each color, showing several choices for the school’s Board of Education committee to review and make some decisions. Here are some of the designs I presented to them in an online meeting.

I was pleased with myself that I suggested a “stunning scheme” of white, red, gray, and black. And now I will admit what I really did not know then … “those are the school colors!”

Now the PAC is an exciting space full of school spirit!

We used Benjamin Moore paint, which the school’s painter wanted to use. I suggested they use AURA Interior Paint, a premium quality paint that goes on with good coverage, but that was outside their budget, so they went with Ben Interior Paint, a fine option. Here are the colors we used in an Eggshell finish:

Wedding Veil 2125-70 (white)

Neon Red 2087-10 (red)

Black Horizon 2132-30 (black)

Sea Haze 2137-50 (gray)

I got a very nice thank-you letter from the superintendent of schools, Dr. Hal Abraham. Since it’s been done, I’ve heard they’ve had many events there, including an art show, a school play, and a few Board of Education meetings.

People just LOVE it! Go Wildcats!

“Your creativity and attention to detail in transforming the space have truly been remarkable. Staff, students, and parents have all expressed how spectacular the new design is, and how it has added a profound sense of pride to everyone who steps into the space. Thank you once again for your incredible contribution to our district.”
