If you’ve been eyeing your powder room thinking “eh, it needs something,” now’s the time. Now look, lots of folks will tell you their “favorite things” on Prime Day. But I’m not just tossing together a gift guide here. When I pick something as a designer, I can’t just make selections as though it’s for me — it’s always for somebody else. I have to consider the feelings of others and how they might want a room to look. And if I don’t know them extremely well — or I’m designing for a broad audience — that’s when the real Mary’s Magic kicks in.

The Powder Room Edit: Bold, Usable, Beautiful

The powder room is the one place where I tell people to go for it. It’s not about being practical — it’s about creating a little moment. Dramatic wallpaper? Yes. Black toilet? Absolutely. Pine-framed mirror with brass lighting? Do it.

The Laundry Room Edit: From Drudgery to Design Moment

Most laundry rooms are awful. Big fluorescent lights, zero charm, and the kind of vibe that makes you want to throw in the towel. But when you get the lighting right, everything changes. If you have good lighting, you’re going to love doing laundry — because the room feels like you want to get in it.

Ceiling Lighting

“Most laundry rooms I don’t even want to be in… with big fluorescent lights — it’s hard, and it’s very tiresome.”

So we fix it with clean, modern LEDs. It’s part of making someone’s laundry room a sharp ‘wow’ space. And if you’ve got two outlets? Use both. These are adjustable. It doesn’t have to be 5000 Kelvin. Aim for 3000–4000K for natural white that feels good.

Under-Cabinet Lights

You don’t need to gut the room. Just light it well. Under the cabinet light is what you need when you’re folding or you’re trying to get your wash out of the machine and so on. You need close contact lighting, task lighting, instead of the thing on the ceiling that’s just going over your shoulders.
